I Stopped Dying My Hair

I had been dying my hair since I was 16 years old. I’m 25, so it means 9 years of dying my hair both at home and getting them done by hairdresser. At first I was doing it for fun, then first grey hair starts to show up and I was trying to cover them and keep up with the color.

My favorite hair color was red. I was experimenting with a lot of shades of red on my hair and I was getting a lot of compliments.

Last year was a year of many significant changes in my life. My relationship ended, I moved to the Netherlands and got a new job that I never thought I would be doing. My attitude towards things had changed as well.

One of the things that had changed significantly was my appearance. I stopped wearing full face of make up every day, instead I do mascara, maybe some eye look but I haven’t worn foundation for months now. It is not that my skin is perfect and without any flaws but I do what feels better for me personally at the moment. If I change my mind in the future, so be it, but I don’t want to feel like I have to do anything because of ‘beauty standards’. Like, come on, I’m far from being an example of what’s considered beauty and I don’t need to feel pressure 😉

They say that whenever a girl is experiencing a big change in her life, she changes her hairstyle. It is true for me. I cut my hair short because it was driving me crazy, getting tangled every time I wore my winter jacket. But first, I stopped dying my hair.

I have very fine hair and to be honest, not too much of it on my scalp. Because of 9 years of coloring, it was extremely dry and damaged. Actually, it is still extremely dry but I’m working on it and it’s entirely different story because new shampoo almost fried it.

And back to natural hair color – it’s a look 😁

My hair on this photo doesn’t look like it has a lot of gray hair, thanks lightning and the fact that my phone’s camera is not able to catch it. But actually there’s plenty of grey hair on my head right now #genes.

How do I feel about it? To be honest, I’m not focusing on that. I enjoy the fact that I don’t have to deal with color fading and my roots growing out. Maybe in the future I will consider dying them again and it’s just a phase but I really think my hair need a break as much as I do.

Last but not least, I’ve seen article on Facebook about women rocking their natural grey hair and it was a big inspiration for me, when I felt like I needed a change and finally decided to give up dying my own hair. If you are interested in reading it, here’s a link.
